1. Course Delivery Types

When registering, in person sections will have a room displayed, and online sections will have “ONLINE” in the room column. Additional information regarding online delivery will also be displayed (e.g. asynchronous or synchronous). A glossary of the different online deliveries can be found below.

While we strive to minimize alterations to the class schedule, please note that changes to the schedule, including course delivery types, may be made between now and the first day of classes. To ensure your course selection is based on the most up-to-date information, we recommend you revisit your timetable periodically prior to the start of classes.

Course Delivery Types

The following course delivery type will appear in the “Section Information” listing in Carleton Central:

ONLINE SYNCHRONOUS SECTION:  real-time, online section where the instructor and students meet via web conferencing tools, at scheduled days and times. Students must be available during the scheduled day and time. Instructors and students share information, ideas and learning experiences in a virtual course environment. This course may include required in-person assessments, which will be confirmed in the course outline. Participation in synchronous sections requires students to have reliable, high-speed internet access, a computer (ideally with a webcam), and a headset with a microphone.

ONLINE ASYNCHRONOUS SECTION: An online section where the instructor and students share information, ideas, and learning experiences in a virtual course space. Asynchronous sections do not have live, scheduled meetings online or fixed-time assessments. However, students are expected to remain up to date with the deadlines and due dates provided by the instructor. This course may include required in-person assessments, which will be confirmed in the course outline. These sections require high-speed Internet access and a computer.

ONLINE COMBINED SYNCHRONOUS/ASYNCHRONOUS: An online section where there is a mixture of synchronous meetings and asynchronous activities. This means students need to be prepared to meet some of the time online via web conferencing tools at scheduled days and times. The specific dates will be communicated by the instructor in the course outline. The asynchronous activities are intended to provide flexibility to students when the class is not meeting synchronously. Students are expected to remain up to date with the deadlines and due dates provided by the instructor. This course may include required in-person assessments, which will be confirmed in the course outline. These sections require reliable high-speed Internet access and a computer (ideally with a webcam), and a headset with a microphone.

IN-PERSON SECTION WITH FLEXIBLE ONLINE/ON CAMPUS ATTENDANCE (HYFLEX): In the Hybrid-flexible (HyFlex) model, a single section is offered simultaneously to both on campus and students studying online by the same instructor. Students may choose how they will attend each class, either in-person on campus or online via Zoom. Students attending online will be able to watch the class live, and, in some cases, depending on the course size and design, may actively participate in the course. Instructors may choose to record their course, but this is solely at their discretion. Note: online and on campus students are part of the same section. Max enrollment of the section is limited by the room capacity.

IN-PERSON SECTION WITH ALTERNATIVES FOR ONLINE STUDENTS: In-person section; however, online students are welcome to register. Special arrangements will be made for students who are unable to come to campus, including recorded classes, online in-term assessments, etc.

IN-PERSON SECTION. NOT SUITABLE FOR ONLINE STUDENTS: In-person section; online students should not register.

MIX OF ON CAMPUS AND ONLINE: Section where there is a mixture of in-person and online activities. This means students need to be prepared to meet on campus at the scheduled time, if the time is specified. Online and in-person activities may include meetings, in-term assessment and/or the final exam. Information about online activities will be communicated by the instructor in the course outline. The section is not suitable for online students due to in-person on campus activities, unless permission of the course instructor or department is obtained. These sections require reliable high-speed Internet access and a computer (ideally with a webcam), and a headset with a microphone.
